This week's guest is Kristy Danford, the founding director of
the
Charleston County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, whose
mission is to assist in making sustainable, data-driven
improvements to our criminal justice system and thereby
improve public safety and community well-being.
After seven years of working to reform the local justice system
as
founding director of the council, Danford recently retired from
the
organization. Since the work began in 2015, Charleston has emerged
a national leader for local criminal justice reform efforts.
Under Kristy’s leadership and in partnership with the
MacArthur Foundation’s Safety and Justice Challenge, the
County has seen a 40 percent decrease in the local jail
population, 80 percent decrease in minor charges that lead to
jail time, 60 percent decrease in individual cycling through
the system on low level charges.
